As <a href="http://eepurl.com/bgjimz" target="_blank">my newsletter</a> subscribers found out last week, I recently launched a brand-new <a href="https://saltyoat.com/" target="_blank">Salty Oat web site</a>, which includes both an online quilt shop and a new blog. So, going forward, all new blog posts will appear over <a href="https://saltyoat.com/blogs/blog" target="_blank">here</a>. This blog, and its archives, will remain here, but it will no longer be updated. If you'd like to continue to follow along, please be sure to <a href="https://saltyoat.com/blogs/blog" target="_blank">update your feed readers</a>.Caitlin at Salty Oathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12639387062926709809noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4589956518215981825.post-22180972486985254222016-03-31T22:34:00.000-04:002016-03-31T22:34:37.323-04:00modern sampler quilt along: block G link-up<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<i><br /></i><i>The <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/09/modern-sampler-quilt-along.html">Modern Sampler Quilt Along</a> is an informal and virtual quilt along where we make a block from Yoshiko Jinzenji's <a href="http://www.zakkaworkshop.com/new-products-1/yoshiko-jinzenjis-modern-sampler-quilt" target="_blank">Modern Sampler Quilt</a> pattern each month. You can follow the hashtag <a href="https://instagram.com/explore/tags/modernsamplerquiltalong/" target="_blank">#modernsamplerquiltalong</a> on Instagram to get a peek at everyone's blocks, fabrics, and progress, as we work our way through the pattern together. On the last Tuesday of each month (or Thursday, in this case!), we gather here to share the blocks we've made; this month we worked on Block G from the pattern.</i><br />

<br />
Man, this month's block was a beast. Am I the only one who thought that, or do some of you agree? When it came time to put this block together, I did not have the patience to create small drunkard's path templates and attempt to match seams. So instead, I decided to improvise. I cut each curve freehand, without a ruler, and sewed whatever curve appeared before me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE-hfXB1JXCXZTpvs9FFahm_dcKCL65X5liTVhlRyZoc7lam0g0WlsD5HnNfDdODGBfqVssY0XBf2X_8COcq_5X6U9B-oz8cNpGcPjaWsKYLx0DvTtzJ59Ou4I2xDYrgcJ6O63El7efnk/s1600/IMG_5665.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE-hfXB1JXCXZTpvs9FFahm_dcKCL65X5liTVhlRyZoc7lam0g0WlsD5HnNfDdODGBfqVssY0XBf2X_8COcq_5X6U9B-oz8cNpGcPjaWsKYLx0DvTtzJ59Ou4I2xDYrgcJ6O63El7efnk/s400/IMG_5665.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The result was a bit of a wonky block, and a departure from the original pattern, but I'll take it. I'm curious to see how you each approached this block and those curves. Please share them below!<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">One of my goals for the past few years has been to have my work included in a booth at <a href="http://www.quilts.com/home/index.php" target="_blank">Quilt Market</a> (a bi-annual trade show for quilt shops). Last fall, I was able to accomplish that goal (yay!) when I was asked by <a href="http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Michael Miller Fabrics</a> to create two pillows for their fall Quilt Market booth, using fabrics from their holiday Glitz collection.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTJ_CqEjNlPL3T52KC9J-lut1WQcq9EdZe1IvxnZTyLxQLMCKiORiQFJpYzTKCdKgJeX3NJp18Q2F8ayghlad_Te5q6rP3ULIxwD7h0Bdho3UvqInvjOeulhw3iV3IvgN1brw-cpeYe4s/s1600/IMG_4231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTJ_CqEjNlPL3T52KC9J-lut1WQcq9EdZe1IvxnZTyLxQLMCKiORiQFJpYzTKCdKgJeX3NJp18Q2F8ayghlad_Te5q6rP3ULIxwD7h0Bdho3UvqInvjOeulhw3iV3IvgN1brw-cpeYe4s/s400/IMG_4231.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<br />
Since the objective was to showcase the green, gold, red, and white prints, I wanted to stick with clean, simple designs that referenced the holidays, but weren't over the top. For the first pillow, I envisioned creating a minimal wreath design. I first thought of sewing one of the rings from Denyse Schmidt's <a href="http://www.dsquilts.com/fabric_and_patterns.asp?PageID=83" target="_blank">Single Girl Quilt</a>, but I wanted something that had a bit more space in the borders. Not long after, I found Svetlana of Sotak Handmade's <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/230821724" target="_blank">quilted pillow design</a>---featuring a patchwork ring---and thought it would be lovely in this context.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizIacNoj33Ju2-6UFuO5fwUEQsbPtBX3WZCKd1bcxf6319NNP_cU3GO7Siwt671yy4e1ytvM7chQb5_EpwVjvjKcHaoYZPHAOgTg3tSBQKhvovKhuygPVtBo8wzBoPq2K94aTxNMPl3Qw/s1600/IMG_4234.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizIacNoj33Ju2-6UFuO5fwUEQsbPtBX3WZCKd1bcxf6319NNP_cU3GO7Siwt671yy4e1ytvM7chQb5_EpwVjvjKcHaoYZPHAOgTg3tSBQKhvovKhuygPVtBo8wzBoPq2K94aTxNMPl3Qw/s400/IMG_4234.jpg" style="cursor: move;" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The resulting pillow cover wound up being so pretty and simple, and a subtle nod to the holidays.</span><br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: inherit;">Photo by Michael Miller Fabrics</span></i></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">For the second pillow, I created a design inspired by overlapping cranberry garlands. I made each garland by fusing small red circles to the patchwork pillow top, and then stitching a line through each "strand."</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbubOs7c7WFcX4cKZnJ5vI-jmj5EcK3Nu4bsu2ylNnf_ZSSY8g9zY9ee6iu-okyCuWGx637RxKZPCqaT6UtDfWo3ej5ZaS8tkFsZ6z_AielqDyO44jpS3gDs5DdZQR4trH66ixXkVwbVE/s1600/IMG_4238.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbubOs7c7WFcX4cKZnJ5vI-jmj5EcK3Nu4bsu2ylNnf_ZSSY8g9zY9ee6iu-okyCuWGx637RxKZPCqaT6UtDfWo3ej5ZaS8tkFsZ6z_AielqDyO44jpS3gDs5DdZQR4trH66ixXkVwbVE/s400/IMG_4238.jpg" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In addition to making the pillow, I also wrote up <a href="https://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/fileuploader/download/download?file=custom/upload/File-1452112551.pdf" target="_blank">a free tutorial</a> for it, which is now available on <a href="http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/get-inspired/free-downloads/cranberry-garland-pillow-holiday-glitz.html" target="_blank">Michael Miller's web site</a>, if you would like to make your own. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Each of the pillow backs featured more of the Glitz prints and hidden zippers (I used <a href="http://sotakhandmade.blogspot.com/2012/12/installing-zipper-closure-in-pillow.html" target="_blank">Svetlana's tutorial</a>---my favorite method!), for a fun, festive finish.</span><br />

<br />
Among <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/search/label/pintuck%20%26%20purl" target="_blank">the classes</a> I'm teaching this spring at <a href="http://www.pintuckandpurl.com/" target="_blank">Pintuck & Purl </a>is one on the <a href="http://ohfransson.bigcartel.com/product/fancy-fox-ii-pdf-quilt-pattern" target="_blank">Fancy Fox II</a> block, a quilt pattern designed by Elizabeth Hartman. Using fabrics selected by the shop's owner, Maggie, I created this fun sample for the class.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWwx7H7f9d5DsCghaOcoBXExxlKM-oP0lZPwsfMMEydnaokBVFvkz1wSpv25PdS8iW6I3JnGpMV4HpxHwdeml9jRllsE9Otmzaan2_7KgiU3fu2VXLj10LLDvFjpatjQgwZAeAI9i_qFo/s1600/IMG_5634.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWwx7H7f9d5DsCghaOcoBXExxlKM-oP0lZPwsfMMEydnaokBVFvkz1wSpv25PdS8iW6I3JnGpMV4HpxHwdeml9jRllsE9Otmzaan2_7KgiU3fu2VXLj10LLDvFjpatjQgwZAeAI9i_qFo/s400/IMG_5634.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This fox is larger than those typically found in the Fancy Fox quilts made from the original pattern (<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/545780048572815064/" target="_blank">this being one of my favorite iterations of it</a>), so this individual block measures about 20 in. x 20 in., making it the perfect size for a wall quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQJK2WN7GB5jor3OYarLruRfck5ILljQDGGpW82BXIr1dJ_rdytg2v7uzKYhUydHersndrhX6_mP6-lX2M5mYeSbvydv5lSpuXPPnqUne6JYpr0Fj6nO4Zqcah5DX-EronaIFpe9gEJX0/s1600/IMG_5642.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQJK2WN7GB5jor3OYarLruRfck5ILljQDGGpW82BXIr1dJ_rdytg2v7uzKYhUydHersndrhX6_mP6-lX2M5mYeSbvydv5lSpuXPPnqUne6JYpr0Fj6nO4Zqcah5DX-EronaIFpe9gEJX0/s400/IMG_5642.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since this quilt is destined for the shop's wall, I used <a href="http://twiggyandopal.blogspot.com/2016/01/hanging-mini-quilt-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Jayne's recent tutorial</a> to make it hangable. I was super pleased with how quick it was to add corner triangles and twill tape tabs to the back for holding a wooden slat, and I love that it's such a clean finish. I highly recommend <a href="http://twiggyandopal.blogspot.com/2016/01/hanging-mini-quilt-tutorial.html" target="_blank">this method</a>!<br />

<br />
A few months ago, I began teaching quilting and embroidery classes at <a href="http://www.pintuckandpurl.com/" target="_blank">Pintuck & Purl</a>, an adorable fabric and yarn shop in Exeter, NH. For most of the classes, I've created class samples for potential students to see what we will be making. This month, I taught students how to piece the Fernweh Quilt top, from the gorgeous quilt pattern by <a href="https://domesticstratablog.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Domestic Strata</a>, and I recently finished my sample.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I used fabrics from the shop for my quilt---including <a href="http://cloud9fabrics.com/fabrics/cirrus-solids/" target="_blank">Cloud9 Fabrics' Cirrus Solids</a>---basing the color palette off of <a href="https://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/shop/product/c4900-black/" target="_blank">a beautiful black, peach, and apricot floral print</a> by Carina Gardner, which I used for the backing.<br />
<br />

<br />
I did simple straight-line quilting in light pink, and chose Cotton + Steel's Sprinkle print in black for the binding, since it complemented the front and back so nicely.

I love the graphic nature of this pattern, and would love to one day make a queen-size version for a bed.<br />

<i><br /></i>
<i>The <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/09/modern-sampler-quilt-along.html">Modern Sampler Quilt Along</a> is an informal and virtual quilt along where we make a block from Yoshiko Jinzenji's <a href="http://www.zakkaworkshop.com/new-products-1/yoshiko-jinzenjis-modern-sampler-quilt" target="_blank">Modern Sampler Quilt</a> pattern each month. On the last Tuesday of each month, we gather here to share the blocks we've made; this month we worked on Block F from the pattern.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgefzHtMlUqUdoWkmjunjIwkzPloLURFZkVZJXZIs_u4BID2mqRjPpaLhfnFSiYqU_pmDuVSddf59vALkmpttn6hxh2Gl4L-MMbRSuxXsPUaDkA7_MtSx1SB32AXYU3-Wl80PT69YoTdqg/s1600/IMG_5467.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgefzHtMlUqUdoWkmjunjIwkzPloLURFZkVZJXZIs_u4BID2mqRjPpaLhfnFSiYqU_pmDuVSddf59vALkmpttn6hxh2Gl4L-MMbRSuxXsPUaDkA7_MtSx1SB32AXYU3-Wl80PT69YoTdqg/s400/IMG_5467.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We've made it to the halfway point in the quilt along---yay! This month's block was my favorite so far, mostly because I really love the Yoshiko Jinzenji text print I used.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyi7z6IBNnKobTrRIR0WE5vGNCeotlIDYRLUadJCoa_NT6nMsobhUMiwqJbV5O1E3aU4eT1U6Yb9tXFahzJDt7Oq2Z3yQg9yWgm6IUSZm4D8E_-XJGM-vfLXtEmygB8MKDiiqSBTY_16s/s1600/IMG_5469.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyi7z6IBNnKobTrRIR0WE5vGNCeotlIDYRLUadJCoa_NT6nMsobhUMiwqJbV5O1E3aU4eT1U6Yb9tXFahzJDt7Oq2Z3yQg9yWgm6IUSZm4D8E_-XJGM-vfLXtEmygB8MKDiiqSBTY_16s/s400/IMG_5469.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Rather than piecing the curves on my machine, I opted to needle-turn appliqué each of the half ovals to the background strips, and then machine sewed them from there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXY0y9eHIXx-UqghutET38qsPEAec0fFvgMRewyXXrkmZncXMxdo4DooxcsaQAZSV38WPV_6OOHvb-t3Iy9S1J8bb3zXiXqm05XXIfTRhvsEIMc6Lb8ztuSSKOJxQvAZv2rVoYui3iBh0/s1600/IMG_5475.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXY0y9eHIXx-UqghutET38qsPEAec0fFvgMRewyXXrkmZncXMxdo4DooxcsaQAZSV38WPV_6OOHvb-t3Iy9S1J8bb3zXiXqm05XXIfTRhvsEIMc6Lb8ztuSSKOJxQvAZv2rVoYui3iBh0/s400/IMG_5475.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since we're halfway through the pattern, I thought it would be a great time for us to post all six blocks we've completed thus far, and cheer each other on. Here are all of my blocks so far (I haven't trimmed them yet, hence the varying sizes---ha!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
To celebrate everyone who has completed their first six blocks, <a href="http://www.zakkaworkshop.com/" target="_blank">Zakka Workshop</a> and I have teamed up to create two small giveaway bundles, featuring coin purse kits, cuts of Yoshiko Jinzenji prints, and screen-printed fabric panels from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/saltyoat" target="_blank">the Salty Oat shop</a>.<br />

To be in the running for one of the two bundles, simply link up to a photo showing all six of your finished blocks by next Tuesday, March 1, at 11:59 pm EST. I'll select two winners from all of the entries on Wednesday, March 2. You'll still be able to post photos of your Block F until our next link-up on March 29.<br />
<br />
<i>UPDATE: Thank you so much to everyone that posted their finished blocks, and congrats to A Quilter's Table and Bespoke Outlaw on winning the prize bundles!</i><br />
<br />
Now let's see your blocks!<br />
<br />

<i>The <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/09/modern-sampler-quilt-along.html">Modern Sampler Quilt Along</a> is an informal and virtual quilt along where we make a block from Yoshiko Jinzenji's <a href="http://www.zakkaworkshop.com/new-products-1/yoshiko-jinzenjis-modern-sampler-quilt">Modern Sampler Quilt</a> pattern each month. You can follow the hashtag <a href="https://instagram.com/explore/tags/modernsamplerquiltalong/">#modernsamplerquiltalong</a> on Instagram to get a peek at everyone's blocks, fabrics, and progress, as we work our way through the pattern together. <br />
Welcome to our fifth link-up! I found this month's block to be the easiest to piece of all of the ones we've done so far. Do you agree? For mine, I simply pieced a basic nine-patch block, turned it at an angle, and trimmed it down to the necessary block size before adding mitered borders.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Next month, we'll be halfway through the pattern (!), and I want to celebrate everyone's hard work! For February's link-up, post a photo of all six of your completed blocks for a chance to win some fun goodies (including fabric!). If you're just joining us, or still have a block or two to finish, this will be a great reason to get caught up!<br />
<br />
Now let's share our blocks!<br />
<br />
HOW TO LINK UP<br />
1. Click the "Add your link" button below, and link to a blog post or Instagram photo of your Block E. In the "Link Title" field, enter your blog name or Instagram handle.<br />
<br />
2. If you're linking to a blog post, please link back to this post somewhere in your post. If you're linking to an Instagram photo, be sure to tag your photo with the hashtag #modernsamplerquiltalong.<br />

<br />
This month has been a busy one for me (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/_mjKN_LfSd/" target="_blank">we bought a house!</a>), so I'm thankful I had the forethought to make Block D last month, while I had the pattern and my fabrics out on the table. I found this block to be relatively straightforward---especially when compared to <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/11/modern-sampler-quilt-along-block-c-link.html" target="_blank">the curves we encountered last month</a>!---and I wound up paper piecing each of the rows, to have them remain as accurate as possible.<br />
<br />
Now let's see your blocks!<br />
<br />
HOW TO LINK UP<br />
1. Click the "Add your link" button below, and link to a blog post or Instagram photo of your Block D. In the "Link Title" field, enter your blog name or Instagram handle.<br />
<br />
2. If you're linking to a blog post, please link back to this post somewhere in your post. If you're linking to an Instagram photo, be sure to tag your photo with the hashtag #modernsamplerquiltalong.<br />

<br />
In addition to the <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/11/oversized-log-cabin-baby-quilt.html" target="_blank">oversized log cabin</a> and <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/11/amish-hourglass-baby-quilt.html" target="_blank">Amish hourglass</a> quilts I made for <a href="https://www.facebook.com/makerswaypost/" target="_blank">The Maker's Waypost</a> (which opened this past Saturday!), I also completed a small throw, featuring a colorful assortment of <a href="http://lilliansstitches.blogspot.com/2012/06/rolling-stone-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Rolling Stone blocks</a>.<br />
<br />

<br />
I first made <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/rA_AQULfWz/?taken-by=saltyoat" target="_blank">two blue versions of this block</a> for a quilt for the Wish Circle of do. Good Stitches. I had so much fun putting those together, that I decided to make more, using lots of colorful scraps from my stash and relatively low-volume prints for the background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8Kd6an30OiS1t106zKrVHa5qqS69UKK9j1-Hhb_7w6IAIFw0XeL3_CuXt27j9WnkM_wzd-cxboDk4GHSvwbiJzUI7_bgunTWdC4OKFII81r3Kov-MtCtSmNCrhKYCRB6fdcB-R4-PprA/s1600/IMG_4694.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8Kd6an30OiS1t106zKrVHa5qqS69UKK9j1-Hhb_7w6IAIFw0XeL3_CuXt27j9WnkM_wzd-cxboDk4GHSvwbiJzUI7_bgunTWdC4OKFII81r3Kov-MtCtSmNCrhKYCRB6fdcB-R4-PprA/s400/IMG_4694.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since the quilt's top is quite busy (and colorful!), I opted for a black-and-white cross-hatch print by Alexander Henry for the back.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I loved putting this quilt together, and the resulting blocks, and would still love to make more. You can find this quilt, and others, at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/makerswaypost/" target="_blank">The Maker's Waypost</a> in Whitinsville, MA.<br />

<i>The holidays are fast approaching, and gift guides are popping up all over the place. I've loved the <a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/2015/11/gifts-for-quilters-2015.html" target="_blank">gift guides for quilters</a> that Amy from Diary of a Quilter has published over the past few years, so I wanted to put together my own list of go-to sewing tools and favorite quilting-themed gifts. I'd also love to know what tools and gifts are on your holiday list this year, so be sure to share them in the comments below. </i></div>

<br />
The <a href="http://www.connectingthreads.com/tools/Kwik_Klip__D82219.html" target="_blank">Kwik Klip</a> is a basting tool that helps you easily close safety pins when pin basting your quilting projects. This tool has definitely sped up my basting process, and reduced the soreness in my fingers caused by closing hundreds of safety pins in an afternoon!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I use my <a href="http://www.purlsoho.com/hera-marker.html" target="_blank">hera marker</a> all the time to mark quilting lines in my quilt tops. I've had mixed results with marking chalk and pens washing out of my projects, so I enjoy having the peace of mind knowing that this tool will only leave a temporary crease in my quilt top, and not a colored line.<br />

<span style="text-align: start;">Pincushions are a must, and my favorite are <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/namolio?section_id=7192850&ref=shopsection_leftnav_1" target="_blank">the beautiful crocheted linen ones by Namolio</a>.</span>

<br />
I've been using a <a href="http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/vinyl-table-pad-in-white/100331" target="_blank">felt-backed vinyl tablecloth</a> as a design wall for the past few years and I love it. I simply tack it to the wall with flat-head thumbtacks, and it holds my WIPs without a problem. It's also super easy to take down whenever we move.<br />

A sewing machine is a definitely at the higher end of the gift-giving spectrum, but I have two recommendations in case you're feeling extra generous: the <a href="http://janome.com/en/machines/sewing/jem-gold-660/" target="_blank">Janome Jem Gold</a> (perfect for first-time sewers and those looking for a lightweight back-up/travel machine) and the <a href="http://www.jukihome.com/products/quilt_tl2010q.html" target="_blank">Juki TL-2010Q</a> (an investment for sure, but a workhorse of a machine).<br />

On the last Tuesday of each month, we gather here to share the blocks we've made; this month we worked on Block C from the pattern.</i><br />
<div>
<br />
Welcome to our third link-up for the Modern Sampler Quilt Along! This month's block was a bit of a departure from previous months' blocks---there were curves!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUoHNrfphmLRYdfzPKbKIPn-FNkE88tgTNXgjHyVoSmUPYFRuHO_xfELolrkExb3j1WsJwfbnQ11boSU8RVW6kRroyRj7TNDj-DwgudxOpLIDoV1csdqau_juSF-TRsqFvsggmCSJzzRc/s1600/IMG_4930.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUoHNrfphmLRYdfzPKbKIPn-FNkE88tgTNXgjHyVoSmUPYFRuHO_xfELolrkExb3j1WsJwfbnQ11boSU8RVW6kRroyRj7TNDj-DwgudxOpLIDoV1csdqau_juSF-TRsqFvsggmCSJzzRc/s400/IMG_4930.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Block C features a cup and saucer, and I opted to construct and sew my cup using needle-turn appliqué. I cut out templates of the shapes (adding in a seam allowance), which I used to cut my fabric. I then basted my fabric shapes to the background and hand stitched the edges, turning them under as I went.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2kW-Q50JUGNQvUACPRaxIcDoUkrKNFAly414nVjY-FIrTid6-F8oBeTypBIWcO1TSoa3Cw0_nW2gftLvFROSz-sQav3vxVp_DgiigcH14zc-yVrAWnF0GqfxxOThFTa9RZ0OsI-XvPfc/s1600/IMG_4937.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2kW-Q50JUGNQvUACPRaxIcDoUkrKNFAly414nVjY-FIrTid6-F8oBeTypBIWcO1TSoa3Cw0_nW2gftLvFROSz-sQav3vxVp_DgiigcH14zc-yVrAWnF0GqfxxOThFTa9RZ0OsI-XvPfc/s400/IMG_4937.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
How did you piece Block C? And which block has been your favorite so far? I'd love to know!<br />
<br />
TIP<br />
If you've never tried needle-turn appliqué before, Carolyn Friedlander's book, <a href="http://luckyspool.com/collections/books/products/savor-each-stitch" target="_blank">Savor Each Stitch</a>, is a great resource to get you started.<br />

HOW TO LINK UP<br />
1. Click the "Add your link" button below, and link to a blog post or Instagram photo of your Block C. In the "Link Title" field, enter your blog name or Instagram handle.<br />
<br />
2. If you're linking to a blog post, please link back to this post somewhere in your post. If you're linking to an Instagram photo, be sure to tag your photo with the hashtag #modernsamplerquiltalong.<br />

<br />
After making <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/07/hourglass-mini-quilt.html" target="_blank">this mini Amish hourglass quilt</a>, I was itching to make another, larger, one---so I did!<br />

<br />
This version features a combination of an American Made Brand navy solid and scraps of solid white, and slightly larger hourglasses. I really love the simple and graphic look of this particular design, and I enjoyed revisiting it (and I foresee more in my future!).<br />

The back is a Dear Stella ikat print from my stash, and the quilt is bound with a navy-and-light blue Cotton and Steel plus-sign print, which I picked up on a recent visit to <a href="http://quiltedthreads.com/" target="_blank">Quilted Threads</a>, a local quilt shop.<br />

<br />
Lately, I've been playing around with the log cabin block, experimenting with scale, color placement, and improvisational piecing. This quilt is the first result of my efforts: an oversized log cabin baby quilt. I selected a simple color palette of navy, cream, and peach for the quilt, using American-made solids for the top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLM4wGflZa51kadZkglQ5CoDqwFRP90Hm8B3uE20XNdDI6DFd2p2YXl32hV_ANCq71iIZh4toLEj0-vwWi2RyxHmmZPMUmaO9Zqt9Pmi8jCRyPT8yHtNndQWlMUUyDxLEhJ9MpvRJffHY/s1600/IMG_4642.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLM4wGflZa51kadZkglQ5CoDqwFRP90Hm8B3uE20XNdDI6DFd2p2YXl32hV_ANCq71iIZh4toLEj0-vwWi2RyxHmmZPMUmaO9Zqt9Pmi8jCRyPT8yHtNndQWlMUUyDxLEhJ9MpvRJffHY/s400/IMG_4642.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Wanting to maintain the quilt's simplicity, I quilted it with a grid, using cream thread.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMZpdx1aUyBJnfqE3_jKyM0lMRV5V0GS0-SQdBW5xlGG1MH-WXRPghkA5J84E3tbJSXLNHMjs2L-wtYLd2K9r9fACSx9UuH0kVzRiZZBEHKO6jMY3lFHvIeczGsY1eGUhDijqxTJkb3LM/s1600/IMG_4645.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMZpdx1aUyBJnfqE3_jKyM0lMRV5V0GS0-SQdBW5xlGG1MH-WXRPghkA5J84E3tbJSXLNHMjs2L-wtYLd2K9r9fACSx9UuH0kVzRiZZBEHKO6jMY3lFHvIeczGsY1eGUhDijqxTJkb3LM/s400/IMG_4645.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The back, a super soft Nani Iro double gauze, is my favorite part. It's so soft and squishy! For the binding, I used Bonnie Christine fabric left over from <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/08/cultivate-blog-tour-new-wall-quilt.html" target="_blank">my circles and triangles wall quilt</a>.<br />

<i>The <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/09/modern-sampler-quilt-along.html" target="_blank">Modern Sampler Quilt Along</a> is an informal and virtual quilt along where we make a block from Yoshiko Jinzenji's <a href="http://www.zakkaworkshop.com/new-products-1/yoshiko-jinzenjis-modern-sampler-quilt" target="_blank">Modern Sampler Quilt</a> pattern each month. On the last Tuesday of each month, we gather here to share the blocks we've made; this month we worked on Block B from the pattern.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
Welcome to the second link-up for the <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/09/modern-sampler-quilt-along.html" target="_blank">Modern Sampler Quilt Along</a>! Thank you so much to everyone who posted a <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/09/modern-sampler-quilt-along-block-link-up.html" target="_blank">Block A</a> last month; your blocks and fabrics choices were excellent!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jjsN_41z3FoqXxAEC0ln5829ZMBLqv0Ad8XUO-W1-IimSvK8MOxZsNKUP9UCsHpXNzXfw4rel7nxjfmV97YuI2fZN8VR9yvuVGrnkK2loHhyZjgA78iUx2E38AZ5ax6BwokyI4SGffg/s1600/IMG_4538.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jjsN_41z3FoqXxAEC0ln5829ZMBLqv0Ad8XUO-W1-IimSvK8MOxZsNKUP9UCsHpXNzXfw4rel7nxjfmV97YuI2fZN8VR9yvuVGrnkK2loHhyZjgA78iUx2E38AZ5ax6BwokyI4SGffg/s400/IMG_4538.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since Block B had a significant number of pieces to it, I opted to use foundation paper piecing to construct mine. I traced the pattern template onto paper (in reverse), and stitched the fabric directly to it. Similar to Block A, I again used out-of-date quilt labels and a Yoshiko Jinzenji print for the background, and this time included a bright pink Kei Honeycomb dot and a sage green print by Umbrella Prints in some of the main shapes.<br />
<br />

TIP<br />
If you're new to foundation paper piecing, and would like to use the technique in this or future blocks, Michael Ann has a great <a href="http://www.michaelannmade.com/2015/06/foundation-paper-piecing-crash-course.html" target="_blank">step-by-step photo tutorial</a> and simple block pattern to get you started.<br />

<br />
Have you seen <a href="http://www.vanessachristenson.com/" target="_blank">Vanessa Christenson's</a> Simply Color books for <a href="http://luckyspool.com/" target="_blank">Lucky Spool</a>? Each one is dedicated to a color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) and contains a bit of color theory about that color, as well as a handful of sewing projects made from the featured hue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdU9TMMFp0fHX7LUTXbc6C_2BIrM3oYC6-jl1DrHkOgQDDWArGYMR6UmF1-Y0mCn1XZgmt2FZD8FrBv9d7IGCM5ZvTUBtDqVXdhky1t_MCxlcClKbgEENMwpiOlJKXmsq_qjit17Nt0dE/s1600/IMG_4529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdU9TMMFp0fHX7LUTXbc6C_2BIrM3oYC6-jl1DrHkOgQDDWArGYMR6UmF1-Y0mCn1XZgmt2FZD8FrBv9d7IGCM5ZvTUBtDqVXdhky1t_MCxlcClKbgEENMwpiOlJKXmsq_qjit17Nt0dE/s400/IMG_4529.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Being a fan of yellow quilts (as seen <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/07/exploring-whole-cloth-quilts.html" target="_blank">here</a>, <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/07/yellow-and-white-diamond-quilt.html" target="_blank">here</a>, and <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2014/03/do-good-stitches-yellow-cross-quilt.html" target="_blank">here</a>) I grabbed a copy of the <a href="http://luckyspool.com/collections/books/products/simply-color-yellow" target="_blank">yellow volume</a> a few months ago, and loved all of the projects in it. I was immediately drawn to the Pineapple Rind quilt (pictured above), since it appeared to be such a great candidate for using up scraps---something I'm always attempting to do.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhamqjA-qilLDmesIEsjiM1ApM7JTLa-jmdVBMuCT7oYrHdHLntT42HaG7rHMpQOI_Bkg5eIp4Ec-CrulZkxNh0yvHmoR7oxWeuERlaRYocn7BtSbUPIJXjQ0WMwXK49Qht1piYip0GGv4/s1600/IMG_4436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhamqjA-qilLDmesIEsjiM1ApM7JTLa-jmdVBMuCT7oYrHdHLntT42HaG7rHMpQOI_Bkg5eIp4Ec-CrulZkxNh0yvHmoR7oxWeuERlaRYocn7BtSbUPIJXjQ0WMwXK49Qht1piYip0GGv4/s400/IMG_4436.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I wound up making three versions of the quilt, and, rather ironically, didn't use any yellow fabric! Instead I made blue, green, and red iterations of the pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx7SbIqcVKnsO6M0sbmYCfNVei9xUsECDYoSU8MdZnScRu9RMqld3WiegOZV3guzHryYr-6JjLL_b7flbwyFeEVQnDnjLp_II9z2NQg3qhzvGPsp3M18iLaufAtzkhVDrScVLAUAS4qXU/s1600/IMG_4416.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx7SbIqcVKnsO6M0sbmYCfNVei9xUsECDYoSU8MdZnScRu9RMqld3WiegOZV3guzHryYr-6JjLL_b7flbwyFeEVQnDnjLp_II9z2NQg3qhzvGPsp3M18iLaufAtzkhVDrScVLAUAS4qXU/s400/IMG_4416.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It was such a fun and satisfying pattern to make (I highly recommend the book!), and a great way to make a dent in my stash. All three quilts are now available in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/saltyoat" target="_blank">the shop</a> (<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/253431527" target="_blank">blue</a>, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/253535778" target="_blank">green</a>, and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/253427459" target="_blank">red</a>).<br />

Right around the time of our move to NH, it was my turn to act as the quilter for the Wish Circle of <a href="https://www.flickr.com/groups/dogoodstitches/" target="_blank">do. Good Stitches</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I requested all of my circle members to create two <a href="http://mamalovequilts.blogspot.com/2013/01/tutorial-birds-in-air-quilt-block.html" target="_blank"><span id="goog_677945904"></span>Birds in the Air<span id="goog_677945905"></span></a> quilt blocks, albeit with a slightly different color placement than the tutorial. I asked for a mix of solid whites and grays, with an orange print in only one of the two blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwRDHbSOZdkXMLrn74Vf7fUWzkAMD1znTBn_4gkPIGvm9R-GhLGdLUFqp3WMhx9AkC8rq1k_qpsPWcjJxv3U_3__Uc2GS53zCt3CIMrWL_bPI5f9WVAPJmh740iM-Zz7JvajdIT6ny8wM/s1600/IMG_4346.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwRDHbSOZdkXMLrn74Vf7fUWzkAMD1znTBn_4gkPIGvm9R-GhLGdLUFqp3WMhx9AkC8rq1k_qpsPWcjJxv3U_3__Uc2GS53zCt3CIMrWL_bPI5f9WVAPJmh740iM-Zz7JvajdIT6ny8wM/s400/IMG_4346.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I received all of the blocks, I played around with the layout, winding up with something quite different than I had originally envisioned---which I love! I also love the variations in the shades of solid gray, and the random pops of orange scattered throughout the quilt top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I used an orange Marimekko circle print for the background, quilted it with intersecting lines in orange thread, and bound it with a scrappy orange binding.<br />

<i style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Droid Sans'; line-height: 20.8px;">Today, I'm so excited to reveal the second of two whole-cloth quilts I launched this week! (You can read about the first one <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/10/fairy-tale-whole-cloth-quilt-interview.html" target="_blank">here</a>.) I've been collaborating with a few designers to design quilt tops for the shop, which I then have digitally printed onto fabric and turn into finished quilts. <i><br /></i>
<i>Caitlin: Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you came to design fabrics and quilts?</i><br />
<br />
<i>Kelsey:</i> My love of textiles began with a pair of knitting needles from Disney World when I was eight, and has morphed and blossomed unimaginably since with encouragement from my mom. Fabric design has been the most recent adventure. Just two years ago, I stumbled upon Leslie Keating’s Hand-Printed Fabric Swap online and printed my first fabric design, <a href="http://www.lovelyandenough.com/2013/03/simple-screen-printing.html" target="_blank">Drunken Circles</a>, with a stencil and embroidery hoop. That next summer while studying abroad, I took a textile silk-screening class for a month and fell in love. Come fall, I wheedled an independent textile design course out of my advisor and transformed it into <a href="http://www.lovelyandenough.com/p/senior-show.html" target="_blank">a senior exhibition</a> the next spring. It’s a year and a half later now, and I have never looked back.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFz0AM6Z5pK-5SoiXPTJGgDWh-htVhfECXFi5LH6ixiBQMsnBUfawztYVzvZJ52fhVvbpxPv4Jpe2fHt-rMeQb4q6xyY4ZWA5CuVddKUFMPIn38vd2YWRFZ3abFiNapAKUCUj5DxdIFcY/s1600/IMG_7717.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFz0AM6Z5pK-5SoiXPTJGgDWh-htVhfECXFi5LH6ixiBQMsnBUfawztYVzvZJ52fhVvbpxPv4Jpe2fHt-rMeQb4q6xyY4ZWA5CuVddKUFMPIn38vd2YWRFZ3abFiNapAKUCUj5DxdIFcY/s400/IMG_7717.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<i>C: Tell us a bit more about the degree you're pursuing. How do you balance your creative time with your course load?</i><br />
<br />
<i>K:</i> I’m a nerd. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Fiber and Polymer Sciences at North Carolina State University. Learning about topics as far reaching as dirt-masking carpet fiber shapes, wrinkle release treatments, and color vision has only enhanced my interest and passion for fabric. This semester, especially, I am known to spew tidbits from my most recent lecture to anyone who will listen (or can’t escape). Balancing creative time with my course load is tricky and lately has involved umpteen sketch breaks during proposal writing and lab reports. I find a little creative break is the best way to rejuvenate me before hitting the books again (and a little book studying is the perfect way to energize me to sew!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidShwF8icnAni8KhEz7Y79pCctClDibqAV_LtcX2S47VlTa-kES7K18cLn8nUqhv1I4PU07m-y5OhRFRzBmQM9LEvdHVliRmzBOsodj8_ZlOdxt8I87v3A2mS829sTbbG7T2DS-oUN-Kg/s1600/burningscreens-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidShwF8icnAni8KhEz7Y79pCctClDibqAV_LtcX2S47VlTa-kES7K18cLn8nUqhv1I4PU07m-y5OhRFRzBmQM9LEvdHVliRmzBOsodj8_ZlOdxt8I87v3A2mS829sTbbG7T2DS-oUN-Kg/s400/burningscreens-2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<i>C: How would you describe your aesthetic? What motifs and colors do you find yourself drawn to?</i><br />
<br />
<i>K:</i> I am a stickler for clean design, which more recently has pushed me toward grays, white, and red.<br />
<br />
I am also obsessed with midcentury modern furniture: clean lines and eye-catching angles. If my quilts could be sold just one place, I would choose <a href="http://www.roomandboard.com/" target="_blank">Room & Board</a>. When I’m dreaming up a new quilt, I imagine I’m standing on the first floor of Room & Board in Chicago, and I try to picture how the quilt would look hanging above the Eames chairs and minimalist table there. If the quilt fits, it’s a winner.<br />
<br />
<i>C: Can you describe your workspace/sewing space in Raleigh, NC?</i><br />
<br />
<i>K:</i> My workspace is in flux right now. Although I mostly sew in my bedroom, I feel most inspired to sketch in the gorgeous modern library at school. With rather poor light at home, photographing for the blog happens across the city, from the library to the warehouse district to a panel of beadboard tossed on the balcony. In fact, my favorite new way to snap quick pics is rolling the butcher block kitchen cart over to the window and pulling the white curtains around for extra reflected light.<br />
<br />
I'm in my bedroom right now actually! I just assembled a new desk this weekend so that I can have my sewing machine set up at all times. I do believe that sewing productivity is dependent on having good work flow with stations for cutting, pressing, and stitching all at the ready. Now, I have two of the three! When I want to truly get in the zone, I pop up the antique wooden ironing board that is propped against my wall, and then I am set to go for hours with Netflix as company.<br />
<br />

<br />
<i>C: Tell us about the gorgeous Pistachio quilt you designed for Salty Oat! What was your inspiration and how did you decide on a design?</i><br />
<br />
<i>K:</i> Thumbnail, thumbnail, thumbnail. Ms. Tank would not allow me to begin a printmaking assignment until I’d drawn at least six thumbnail sketches, her theory being that your first idea is likely not your most developed. I have carried that practice with me and draft multiple versions of a project before beginning. Sometimes I circle back around to my first strokes, but often my mind wanders, and I end up in entirely new territory. The pistachio quilt was seven of nine. Experimenting with transparency and seeking a graphic gender-neutral quilt, the design morphed a fair amount moving from paper to computer, finally landing with a red overlay and five minimal stripes.<br />
<br />
<i>C: Where can readers find you online? </i><br />
<br />
<i>K:</i> You can find me online at <a href="http://lovelyandenough.com/">LovelyandEnough.com</a>, as well as <a href="http://lovelyandenough.etsy.com/">LovelyandEnough.Etsy.com</a>, or follow me on <a href="https://instagram.com/LovelyandEnough/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>.<br />

<br />
One of the benefits of making Salty Oat my full-time gig, is that I now have the time to take on commissioned quilts for customers. I was recently asked to make a wall quilt which would be hung above a bed, and needed to work with the room's color palette, which included orange, teal, beige, and gray.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDEMPrOug9Ac3hKEeXeBn_cQiKyYOTFJlS32a3qtbXDBk_vYsSEgWv5F3CK_HO-DToj3W14fFNhDjsfxP9u3YE9ic3ZfgmKKv1j7UmQ2bDpd2y2ukEcaFCMqhTyfIcdk3eUxy_xZZVtRU/s1600/IMG_4161.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDEMPrOug9Ac3hKEeXeBn_cQiKyYOTFJlS32a3qtbXDBk_vYsSEgWv5F3CK_HO-DToj3W14fFNhDjsfxP9u3YE9ic3ZfgmKKv1j7UmQ2bDpd2y2ukEcaFCMqhTyfIcdk3eUxy_xZZVtRU/s400/IMG_4161.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After learning more about the customer's style---including their preference for triangles and diamonds, and a love of animals---I sketched an idea and pulled fabrics from my stash. The design was quickly approved, and I got to work on this 30" x 30" wall hanging, which features two sizes of flying geese, flying both clockwise and counterclockwise.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYSxYa_kz_CBGdnYDQFJoSTFZ_iH7TvQhABE9S0t_kbxKUCRvdZ_n5J8OmQp7JudF3UkjT-rMPdGK44QOU9UhAUv6tL8xVbrXeW85stsIj16P6vGMU_AJIACjrDfcV5DeMDFNXzy8LMWo/s1600/IMG_4162.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYSxYa_kz_CBGdnYDQFJoSTFZ_iH7TvQhABE9S0t_kbxKUCRvdZ_n5J8OmQp7JudF3UkjT-rMPdGK44QOU9UhAUv6tL8xVbrXeW85stsIj16P6vGMU_AJIACjrDfcV5DeMDFNXzy8LMWo/s400/IMG_4162.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I loved working with a new-to-me palette, as well as some of my favorite fabrics (like those Japanese elephants!). I also really enjoyed working on something while being able to visualize the space in which it would eventually hang.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghop89DKVQFtIG1cZaNNUoE95UOOSppZaO1foNy3GDfc8K2Uad9i8YMS7u3kfPHc2-vBcp0Fgqki8ONeeTbCVQyf_1Z5vJ6G1vM4LzDnpbrX9_mHKT4Lda1KBekEV2cFh-g10WF-A31l4/s1600/IMG_4175.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghop89DKVQFtIG1cZaNNUoE95UOOSppZaO1foNy3GDfc8K2Uad9i8YMS7u3kfPHc2-vBcp0Fgqki8ONeeTbCVQyf_1Z5vJ6G1vM4LzDnpbrX9_mHKT4Lda1KBekEV2cFh-g10WF-A31l4/s400/IMG_4175.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I used my go-to Marimekko dots for the backing (I stocked up on so many colors of this print the last time I was at the Crate and Barrel outlet!), and included a hand-stitched hanging sleeve so that it can go right up on the wall in its new home.<br />

<i>Today, I'm so excited to reveal the first of two whole-cloth quilts I'll be launching this week! <i>The first quilt in this collaborative series was designed by Joel and Ashley Selby of Saxapahaw, NC, the married duo behind <a href="http://thispapership.com/" target="_blank">This Paper Ship</a>. Their adorable <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/251677776" target="_blank">Fairy Tale quilt</a> is now available in the shop, and will be made to order. Each quilt features a black-and-white bias stripe binding, a Carolyn Friedlander gray-and-white grid backing, and, of course, This Paper Ship's whimsical fairy tale-themed design. I hope you love this new quilt as much as I do!</i><br />

<div>
<i style="font-size: 13px;"><br class="Apple-interchange-newline" /></i><i>Caitlin: Can you tell us a bit about your background and why you started This Paper Ship?</i><br />
<br />
<i>This Paper Ship:</i> Going way back, we've both been obsessed with drawing for as long as we can remember. We met in a freshman drawing class and hit it off over a fabric study, kept drawing side-by-side throughout our design degrees, and graduated together. During our last year of college, we started an Etsy shop using our own illustrated wedding invitations as an example, and picked up our first client the day before our wedding. The economy was terrible around that time, which prevented us from ever getting our coveted entry-level design jobs, so we just kept plowing forward with self-directed work and paper goods! Seven years later, we're still crazy enough to continue to make a living off of drawing, and now even raise a family off of it. It's been a wild ride, but we wouldn't have it any other way.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Image source: This Paper Ship</i></div>
<br />
<i>C: How would you describe your illustration style?</i><br />
<br />
<i>TPS: </i>In a word: whimsical! We love bright colors, simple shapes, unexpected textures, hand lettering, and fun detail you can get lost in. Our style is made up of a combination of our two hands, since every drawing is a complete collaboration from sketch to ink to final touches on screen. It's taken a long time to merge our two (often) very different approaches to drawing, but it's been worth the effort, and we learn from each other nearly every day. We both like to approach the world with a sense of childlike wonder, though, so that's often our common ground on everything.<br />
<br />

<br />
<i>C: What have been some of your favorite projects to work on?</i><br />
<br />
<i>TPS: </i>Other than our self-directed work, which 99% of the time ends up in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/thispapership" target="_blank">our online shop</a>, our favorite area to work on is the children's market. We both find that drawing things for an audience of children allows us the greatest freedom to play, to use our imaginations, and to really go for broke on bright colors! Specifically, we got the chance to illustrate for <a href="http://thispapership.com/portfolio/land-of-nod-bathroom-line" target="_blank">a bathroom line</a> and <a href="http://thispapership.com/portfolio/land-of-nod-sleeping-bag" target="_blank">a sleeping bag</a> for The Land of Nod a few years back, which was awesome. We also really enjoy doing greeting cards and have had a good working relationship with American Greetings for a few years now. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<i>C: Can you describe your studio in Saxapahaw, NC? </i><br />
<br />
<i>TPS:</i> Saxapahaw is a hundred-plus-year-old cotton mill and mill village about 20 minutes west of Chapel Hill. The mill shut down 20 years ago but has since been rebuilt into a small community of businesses and loft apartments, and we're blessed to live and work out of one of them. We wake every day, walk downstairs with tea and coffee in hand, and go to work at a vintage drawing table and letterpress among the old brick walls, massive steel roof beams, and original floorboards pitted from cotton spinners.<br />
<br />

<i><span style="font-size: x-small;">Fairy Tale Quilt Sketch. Image source: This Paper Ship</span></i></div>
<i><br /></i>
<i>C: Tell us about the stunning Fairy Tale quilt you designed for Salty Oat! What inspired the theme and color choices?</i><br />
<br />
<i>TPS:</i> First, we had a blast doing this—it belongs among the projects in question 3! We had decided on a loose fairy tale theme for our baby girl due October 3 (still not here as of the time of this writing), so we took the basic idea of medieval European banners and used them as the basis for the quilt pattern. In the alternating rectangles with images in them, we drew objects that were personally meaningful to us, but also worked well as general heraldic-style symbols—a ship (for This Paper Ship), the fleur-de-lis of Florence (one of her middle names, where we honeymooned), a bird (inspired from a vintage wall decoration from Ashley's grandma's house), etc. For the colors, we wanted to go bright and make the design work for both boys and girls; we were inspired by Disney's immaculate Sleeping Beauty and their vibrant treatment of color in a Middle Ages setting.<br />

<br />
<i>C: Where can readers purchase your work? Any upcoming events or exciting projects you'd like to share?</i><br />
<br />
<i>TPS:</i> We currently are selling solely at <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/thispapership" target="_blank">our Etsy shop</a>, but are also working on a new shop site coming soon. The next market we'll be vending at is the Saxapahaw Holiday Market in early December at the beautiful Haw River Ballroom—come on out if you can, and you just may be able to meet little miss Sadie in her holiday best! We plan to do a lot of craft markets in the new year, which we'll be announcing on social media as we book them up (@thispapership on just about everything). We're also really excited to announce that we're finalists in the Martha Stewart American Made 2015 Awards, so we would be honored to have you go vote for us! You can vote up to 6 times a day until October 19. (You can see our profile and vote <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/americanmade/nominee/103576/crafts/this-paper-ship" target="_blank">here</a>.)<br />
<br />
<i>Thank you so much to Joel and Ashley for taking the time to answer my questions and for designing a quilt for the shop, and congrats to them on their growing family! You can find their quilt in the shop <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/251677776" target="_blank">here</a>.</i></div>

When <a href="http://jansdotter.com/" target="_blank">Lotta Jansdotter</a> released her first fabric collection with Windham Fabrics back in 2011, I was super excited. Her collection, <a href="http://www.windhamfabrics.net/php/fabricshop/fabricshop.php?a=sc&Category=528" target="_blank">Echo</a>, was so different than anything else out on the market at the time, and it was so fun to see Scandinavian-inspired designs, with the look of a block print, on quilting cotton.<br />

I received a layer cake of the collection's prints for Christmas that year and held on to it, not sure what I wanted to make with the 10" precut squares.<br />

<br />
Each square was divided into four triangles, which were rearranged and sewn back into squares, with a balanced mix of light and dark values among the prints in each block. With the layout that I chose, a checkerboard, set on point, emerged from the quilt top's design.<br />

This quilt has been in progress for what feels like forever, so I'm so excited to finally have a finish to share with you today!<br />

The <a href="http://www.theworkroom.ca/store/johanna-masko-%3A-donuts-%3A-quilt-pattern/dp/8057" target="_blank">Donuts</a> quilt pattern has been on my mind ever since I saw <a href="http://www.heyporkchop.com/hey-porkchop/2198" target="_blank">Amanda's Donut Quilt</a> back in 2013. I loved the whimsical nature of the design---donuts!---and the staggered layout, so I bought a copy of the quilt pattern from <a href="http://www.theworkroom.ca/" target="_blank">The Workroom</a>.<br />

Knowing that this would be a quilt I would keep for myself, I chose to use a number of <a href="http://mazeandvale.bigcartel.com/" target="_blank">Maze & Vale</a> panels that I'd been stockpiling for the donuts. Leslie's fabrics are gorgeous, and I was excited to sew with them and finally include them in a quilt. I used a blue Essex linen for the background, which paired beautifully with the screen-printed fabrics. According to <a href="https://instagram.com/p/tvazTwLfen/?taken-by=saltyoat" target="_blank">Instagram</a>, I made the blocks for this quilt a year ago.<br />

I recently had a quilt to send off to <a href="http://www.crinklelove.com/" target="_blank">Crinklelove</a> for quilting, so I figured this was a great time to take the top out of the WIP pile, and finish it before the New Hampshire winter starts.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.crinklelove.com/" target="_blank">Sarah</a> did a beautiful job quilting Denyse Schmidt-style loops across the top; I'm in love with the texture they created! I inadvertently made a Scandinavian backing for the quilt, pairing a large-scale Marrimekko dot print with a text print from Ikea.<br />

I'm so excited to have finished this quilt---and the final result!---and am looking forward to adding it to the quilt rotation in our house. Do you have any quilt patterns that you love and are hoping to make yourself? I'd love to hear!<br />

Welcome to the first link-up for the <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/09/modern-sampler-quilt-along.html" target="_blank">Modern Sampler Quilt Along</a>, an informal and virtual quilt along where we make a block from Yoshiko Jinzenji's <a href="http://www.zakkaworkshop.com/new-products-1/yoshiko-jinzenjis-modern-sampler-quilt" target="_blank">Modern Sampler Quilt</a> pattern each month! You can follow the hashtag <a href="https://instagram.com/explore/tags/modernsamplerquiltalong/" target="_blank">#modernsamplerquiltalong</a> on Instagram to get a peek at everyone's blocks, fabrics, and process, as we work our way through the pattern together. On the last Tuesday of each month, we gather here to share the blocks we've made; this month we worked on Block A from the pattern.<br />
<br />

<br />
For my quilt, I'm using the Superbuzzy <a href="https://instagram.com/p/7wKXDWLfWA/?taken-by=saltyoat" target="_blank">Yoshiko Jinzenji bundle</a> as the starting point for my fabric selection, and I've pulled a number of complementary fabrics from my stash to round it out, adding in pops of pink, yellow, and aqua.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfRkNjDJY8-6AyV_8r686NftBYToS2objrRzRgaiAooDLak4UxOLhfai6FDTOgK9117tqYBeRKEJZbu_-GRcWo4XJgbQ5J7mq6kqO4q-1u5G4W8S17EMSeCp3qX4Mox8uGtvGwXV5ofvI/s1600/IMG_3846.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfRkNjDJY8-6AyV_8r686NftBYToS2objrRzRgaiAooDLak4UxOLhfai6FDTOgK9117tqYBeRKEJZbu_-GRcWo4XJgbQ5J7mq6kqO4q-1u5G4W8S17EMSeCp3qX4Mox8uGtvGwXV5ofvI/s400/IMG_3846.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For my Block A, I used out-of-date quilt labels, a vintage daisy print (I love the pop of neon coral in the flowers' centers!), solid aqua, an Ikea text print, and a Jinzenji print. One of the things that I really like about this pattern so far is that Jinzenji doesn't specify what types of fabrics to use (lights versus darks, colors versus neutrals) or where to place them, which I found quite freeing. I had fun experimenting with the layout.<br />

TIP<br />
In case this is your first time doing mitered corners on your borders and you'd like a bit of help, Craftsy has <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/03/mitered-quilt-borders/" target="_blank">a step-by-step photo tutorial</a> that shows you how to sew them, and the Fat Quarter Shop has <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMWQABZwis8" target="_blank">a step-by-step video</a> that walks you through the process as well.<br />

<br />
This past Saturday night I attended <a href="https://instagram.com/p/71Ejk7rfdP/?taken-by=saltyoat" target="_blank">my last craft fair</a> of the summer season at Squam Lake here in NH. It was such a lovely evening, and a wonderful way to cap off a summer of many craft shows. I feel like I learned so much preparing and attending events these past few months---a feeling I'm sure is shared by fellow makers who sell their work in person!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP160iqK54-O_MCyXNTZ_uTGKhOCg-JsSizFDqI68RNUkbkt9tmfRwUtGjZpl4iXLYEXYzf5nO18CVbp4lKPM96gPAKzZYJmR58wzwbCUlbhMmgmPtaKBkz224lAaHKug4swatZgTnaHk/s1600/IMG_3699.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP160iqK54-O_MCyXNTZ_uTGKhOCg-JsSizFDqI68RNUkbkt9tmfRwUtGjZpl4iXLYEXYzf5nO18CVbp4lKPM96gPAKzZYJmR58wzwbCUlbhMmgmPtaKBkz224lAaHKug4swatZgTnaHk/s400/IMG_3699.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I learned about which products sold best to which crowd (lavender sachets were an overall hit and drew people to my table with their scent); the best way to label items with their prices so they were easy to read; and how to fine tune my display, especially when it came to quilts and pillows. I took notes at each event and wrote down customer feedback and new product ideas. Though each show was quite different, I feel like they all taught me something---even if it was simply that it wasn't the right show for me!<br />

One of the new items that I introduced into the line-up this summer was color-block tote bags, featuring prints from Ellen Luckett Baker's <a href="http://thelongthread.com/?p=10557" target="_blank">Stamped</a> line. I have a few left from the shows, so I thought now would be a great time to share them with those of you who couldn't make it out to see me this summer---they are now in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/saltyoat?section_id=17855249&ref=shopsection_leftnav_8" target="_blank">the shop</a>!<br />

I'm now getting ready for holiday shows (sending in applications and building inventory) and what I hope will be a busy season. Be sure to keep an eye on the blog's sidebar, where I'll post all upcoming events and shows, to find out where I'll be this fall and winter.<br />
<br />
Happy weekend to you all!<br />
<br />
<i>P.S. Don't forget that next Tuesday, September 29, will be the first official link-up for the <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2015/09/modern-sampler-quilt-along.html" target="_blank">Modern Sampler Quilt Along</a>! We moved into our current house this past May, and I feel like I'm finally settled into my studio enough to share some pictures with you! So I did a bit of straightening up (trust me, it's not always this organized!) and took some photos around the room, if you'd like to see.<br />

The house that we're renting was built in 1898, and my sunny sewing space is on the second floor. It's the largest work space I've had yet, and I've been able set it up in such a way that I can make a quilt from start to finish right here. Whenever I need to baste a quilt, I simply roll up the rug and tape the quilt to the floor.<br />
<br />

I have a dedicated wall for photographs, which is where my fabric shelves reside. I added wheels to the Expedit bookcases I keep my fabric in, so whenever I need to photograph something, I simply wheel them out of the way. The flexibility has been so helpful!<br />

My cutting table consists of an Ikea table top with adjustable legs, so I'm able to cut fabrics while standing. I keep a yellow stool from Target nearby, which I use whenever I want to sit and work at the table. Two wall quilts hang next to the table: my <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2013/01/star-blossoms-mini-quilt.html" target="_blank">Star Blossoms Mini Quilt</a> and the <a href="http://saltyoat.blogspot.com/2012/11/do-good-stitches-swap-what-i-received.html" target="_blank">Cross-Stitch Heart Quilt</a> made for me by Alyssa Lichner of Pile O' Fabric.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The lovely team at <a href="http://www.sewmamasew.com/" target="_blank">Sew Mama Sew</a> recently sent me a bundle of fabrics from Oakshott Fabrics' <a href="http://www.oakshottfabrics.com/categories/quilting-collections/Scandinavia.aspx" target="_blank">Scandinavia collection</a>. When they asked that I create something Scandinavian-inspired, I immediately thought of the interiors of Scandinavian homes I'd seen on Pinterest and Design*Sponge, and wanted to create something that would fit into those clean, modern spaces. When I received the stack of shot cottons, I experimented with a few different quilt blocks based on Scandinavian surface patterns---including improv curves and plus signs---but none of them seemed quite right.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikjuTMgoCStcsgr-B0Fh0Vzga37UWvMo4Pz28dbKZ9SqshhyphenhyphenfaiiujD_s-UoC1-dnQ0mcjupCNiju1prxdquQcKColIBBEtWaA5qxxEDDJK_wZgLok1QOZrQd9sEYGQZVM-m-Gopn4G9A/s1600/IMG_3343.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 0em; margin-right: 0em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikjuTMgoCStcsgr-B0Fh0Vzga37UWvMo4Pz28dbKZ9SqshhyphenhyphenfaiiujD_s-UoC1-dnQ0mcjupCNiju1prxdquQcKColIBBEtWaA5qxxEDDJK_wZgLok1QOZrQd9sEYGQZVM-m-Gopn4G9A/s400/IMG_3343.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
While continuing to brainstorm ideas, the <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/quilting/quilts_patterns/bartow/" target="_blank">Bartow Quilt</a> pattern by Carolyn Friedlander came to mind. The clean lines and simple layout of this free pattern for Robert Kaufman suggested to me that it would be right at home in a modern interior, so I set to work cutting strips from each of the pastel fabrics to create a baby quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I used a combination of cream shot cotton and white cotton for the top's background, and I backed the quilt with a soft Melody Miller linen-cotton print that I picked up in Japan last year, which included many of the colors from the bundle: baby pink, lavender and mint green.<br />

I used cream thread for the cross-hatch quilting, and I machine bound the quilt with leftover Oakshott scraps, using my newest <a href="http://cluckclucksew.com/2013/01/machine-binding-tutorial.html">favorite method for binding</a>.<br />
