big news + book giveaway!

Salty Oat (and the rest of my family!) is moving to Washington, DC, the home of the other famous salty oat cookie! Lots of packing, planning, and traveling will be happening in the upcoming weeks, so you may notice things are a bit quiet in the shop. But have no fear! I will continue to check in and report on some recent craft projects and the progress of our move, and I've scheduled a few posts (full of lots of pretty pictures) to keep you entertained while I'm on the road and in the air.

In the meantime, as I prepare for our move to the East Coast, I've started to go through our house, looking for things that we no longer need and can donate to charities around town. One thing I came across on my shelf was an extra copy of A Rainbow of Stitches, one of my favorite sources for contemporary cross-stitch and embroidery patterns (this project was made using a pattern from the book). I thought you, my dear readers, might find the book useful, and so, I've decided to give my extra copy away.

For a chance to win, either become a follower of this blog and let me know in the comments (or let me know if you already are a follower) or leave a comment and share your favorite thing about DC, whether it's a restaurant to try, a must-see craft store, or a fabulous museum. Please be sure to include your e-mail address in your comment so that I may contact you if you win.

There is one entry per person. Comments will close at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, July 5, and a winner will be chosen at random and announced on Tuesday, July 6. This giveaway is open to international readers.

*Full disclosure: There's a small coffee stain on the top of the book (it adds character!), but it's otherwise brand-new and full of lovely patterns.

  1. Wow, great giveaway. I am already a follower of your lovely blog. I know nothing about DC, only ever visited the U.S. once and that was L.A. Good luck with the move, hope it all goes well.

I am also doing a giveaway if you want to enter http://seasidesiblings.blogspot.com/2010/06/bedroom-inspiration-and-giveaway.html

  2. awesome giveaway.

I signed up to follow the blog, too.

As far as D.C. goes, it seems like there is the usual - the smithsonian museums, etc. I used to live on the east coast and would go to D.C. on a monthly basis. There is a Mormon Temple just outside of DC that was always lit up very pretty at Christmas-time.

  3. I'm a follower already!

I love the Smithsonian. The Cherry Blossom Festival (which you'll have to wait until next year) is amazing. I only went into DC every once in a while, so I don't know all the ins and outs. But my friends who live/d there love the city! Have fun!

  5. I can't believe the move is right around the corner! Hope it goes well!

And some lucky winner is really going to love that book---I was flipping through it the other day and the patterns are SO cute! It's definitely on my wish list now, but it looks like I just might have to wait until the 5th to see what happens. [fingers crossed]

  6. Fun! I am a follower of your blog!

As for DC... I have not been there since I was in high school. We did all the standard government stuff, and Smithsonian, which I heartily enjoyed. All I know is that I have been hearing really great things about DC food lately, so you have that to look forward to!

  8. Hi, I'm a follower on Bloglovin!
I'm from Austin too, but I don't know anything about DC and I've never been there. Well actually I took a bus tour around the east coast and one night at around 1 in the morning we passed by the city and crossed what I think was the Potomac and in the very distance we could see part of the Lincoln Memorial all lit up. It was pretty cool!
If I ever went to visit I would go to the zoo and the Smithsonian to see Julia Child's kitchen.
I never win anything so here's to hoping!

  9. I'm a follower! This isn't quite D.C., but I completely recommend the downtown Old Town Alexandria area. There are tons of cute shops and cafes there. omydarlingblog(at)gmail(dot)com

  10. I became a follower today! This is a great give-away-- thanks for sharing!

The Inn at Little Washington is about 70 miles away from DC, but sometime when you want to totally splurge on an AMAZING meal, I definitely recommend that you check it out. I had one of the top three meals of my life there (which included an appetizer that was so good it made me cry. :)

  12. Hey- this is Megan Gray, I stumbled across your blog- congrats! I would recommend in the next few weeks you go to the National Gallery of Art's sculpture garden for free summer jazz festivals every Friday... everyone brings a picnic and camps out to hear live music! Also a great way to meet some young fun people in town :)
